Doylestown

Two very different
paving towns

Doylestown is really two jobs wearing one name. Inside the borough you have a nineteenth-century street grid, narrow lots, shared drives, alley access behind the older blocks, and frequently no room to turn a truck around. Out in Doylestown Township you have two-acre lots, three-hundred-foot approaches, and drives that need a turnaround because backing onto Route 313 is not a plan.

They need different equipment, different access planning, and different pricing. A contractor who quotes both the same way has not looked at either properly.

Working in the borough

Borough work is about access. Older streets are narrow, on-street parking is tight, and getting a paver and a triaxle to a driveway behind a row of Victorians takes planning rather than optimism. We look at the approach before we quote — where the truck stages, whether we need smaller equipment, and what has to be coordinated with neighbours. If your property sits in the historic district, be aware that visible exterior changes can carry additional review, and it is worth checking before work is scheduled rather than after.

Working in the township

Township properties give us room but bring their own problems: long drives that need proper crown and drainage over their full length, clay soils across much of the area that hold water and heave, and access points onto busier roads where sightlines and apron construction matter. Longer drives also mean the base is the whole cost — get it wrong over three hundred feet and the repair bill is enormous.

Questions

Doylestown
questions

Do I need a permit to pave a driveway in Doylestown?

Replacing an existing driveway in its current footprint generally does not require one. Creating a new access, widening the apron where it meets the road, or changing drainage usually does — and whether you deal with Doylestown Borough or Doylestown Township depends on which side of the line you sit on, since they are separate authorities with separate requirements.

If your access is onto a state route such as 202, 611, or 313, that adds a PennDOT highway occupancy permit. We will tell you what we think applies, but confirm with the municipality before scheduling.

Can you get equipment down a narrow borough driveway?

Usually, and where we cannot get a full-size paver in we hand-lay and use a smaller roller. What matters is knowing before the day rather than discovering it on arrival, so we look at the approach as part of quoting — including where the delivery truck can stage without blocking the street.

How do you handle long township driveways?

Crown and drainage over the full run, and base depth matched to the soil, which on much of the township means clay that holds water. On a long drive we will also talk to you about whether the whole length genuinely needs paving — sometimes a paved section near the house and compacted millings further out is the sensible use of a budget.

Do you work in the historic district?

Yes. Be aware that properties within a historic district can be subject to additional review for visible exterior work, and requirements differ from ordinary permitting. It rarely stops a driveway job, but it can add time to the front end, so it is worth checking with the borough early.

How far is Doylestown from your yard?

About twenty minutes from Hilltown. It is one of the areas we work in most consistently, which means we can usually get out to look at a job quickly and we are not adding travel to the price.
